What ExaShape is

ExaShape is a bovine pericardium-derived matrix designed to support a breast implant while encouraging the body to integrate the material. Bovine pericardium is chosen for its strong, highly organised collagen, which provides mechanical support for the implant pocket.

The bilayer idea

ExaShape is engineered as a bilayer membrane. The design intent is to combine mechanical support with a surface that actively encourages fibroblast activity and neovascularisation — in other words, to promote constructive remodelling into vascularised living tissue rather than encapsulation.

Why integration is the point

As explained in our overview of matrix integration, a scaffold that becomes vascularised is nourished, defended and durable. Designing specifically for revascularisation is what distinguishes an engineered matrix from an inert sheet.

Where it fits in technique

ExaShape is used to support and shape the implant pocket, and is well suited to prepectoral, muscle-sparing reconstruction, where the matrix carries more of the mechanical role. It is often complemented by ExaFat for soft-tissue refinement.
